Letter - Celebrating Success: Beyond Grades and Positions

Adelheid Ngonyofi

As we journey through this academic year, it is crucial for us to reflect on the true essence of education, and the significance of academic performance. Often, the focus tends to revolve around grades and class positions. However, it is vital for us to broaden our perspective and celebrate the unique achievements of each learner, understanding that success transcends mere numbers.

In our educational system, learners are often assigned symbols based on their academic performance. The symbols A, B and C are commonly associated with excellence, good performance and satisfactory performance, respectively. While these symbols are valuable indicators of a learner’s grasp of the material, they should not be the sole measure of success.

It’s essential for parents and guardians to recognise that the number position of their child in the class does not define their intelligence or potential. Every child is unique, possessing a set of skills, talents and capabilities which contribute to their overall development. Placing unjustified pressure on children to attain a specific class position can lead to unnecessary stress, and hinder the joy of learning.

Understanding Passing Number Positions

Instead of viewing passing positions solely as a ranking system, let’s consider them as a reflection of a child’s progress and growth. The passing position is a snapshot of a moment in time, influenced by various factors. It does not determine a child’s worth for future success.

Motivation for Parents

As parents, let’s encourage our children to take pride in their academic achievements, regardless of the passing position. A child who consistently puts in effort, shows improvement and demonstrates a genuine interest in learning, is already a success story. Academic success is a journey, not a destination.

It’s imperative that parents be proud of their children’s accomplishments, big or small. Celebrate their knowledge they have gained, the challenges they overcome, and the skills your children have developed. Embrace the learning process, for it is through perseverance and dedication that true success is achieved.

As educators, our goal is to nurture a love for learning and instilling a sense of confidence in our learners. We believe that every child has the potential to shine in their own way, and it is our collective responsibility to support and guide them on this educational journey.

Above all, let us shift our focus from the pressure of grades and positions to the celebration of individual achievements. By fostering a positive learning environment and acknowledging the diverse strengths of each child, we can create a foundation for lifelong success.

Together, as a supportive educational community, we can inspire our learners to thrive academically and embrace the joy of learning.
