Man kills wife in children’s presence, hangs self

A 56-year-old man allegedly stabbed his wife to death in front of their minor children before proceeding to commit suicide.

Police said Nestroy Nevela used a traditional knife (Omukonda), to slit his wife’s throat.

The deceased woman, Peneyambeko Homboleni, was 30-years-old.

The incident happened during the early hours of Tuesday morning at Onaimbungu village in Ohangwena region.

The village is located in the Omundaungilo constituency.

According to the Ohangwena Police head of crime investigations, Deputy Commissioner Zachariah Amakali, the couple allegedly argued before the deadly incidents ensued.

According to the police, the incident happened as the children were preparing to go to school.

One child is in the pre-primary grade while the other is in grade two.

According to the police, the two minors left their parents dead and alerted teachers at the school that they left their father hanging on a tree, while their mother was in a “pool of blood but could not talk”.

It is reported that when people arrived at the scene, the couple was already dead.

The children are currently receiving counselling due to the trauma, brought about by the hideous ordeal.

The next of kin for both deceased have been informed.

In complete shock and reacting to the news was Omundaungilo constituency councillor Festus Ikanda.

Just last week, Ikanda held a meeting with Onaimbungu’s residents. He lectured them on gender-based violence (GBV), he recalls.

According to Ikanda, alcohol abuse is the main contributing factor to GBV and murder cases in the villages.

“I am shocked and I feel sorry for these young children for what they witnessed,” Ikanda said, before urging Namibians to minimise the use of alcohol and always report domestic violence cases on time.
