T he ne w ly es t a b l i s h e d Implementation Authority Office for the green hydrogen programme has resulted in numerous questions in the public domain. According to a mines and energy ministry directive, the newly established authority will be led by green hydrogen commissioner James Mnyupe for five years.
The authority has also stated it is teaming up for recruitment with Potentia, a human resources consultancy. “To turn this visionary programme into a resounding success, we are teaming up with Potentia, a renowned hiring agency, specialising in identifying exceptional talent. We are on the lookout for dynamic, passionate individuals who share our dedication to shaping a greener, more prosperous future,” said Mnyupe.
The mines ministry last week announced the commissioning of the office under the leadership of Mnyupe, who doubles as presidential economic advisor. However, Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) politician Hidipo Hamata recently expressed concern about the direct management of the green hydrogen programme from the State House.
As such, PDM requested the mines ministry to provide clarity regarding the decision-making process that led to Mnyupe’s new role. “We believe it is essential for the decision-making process to be wellunderstood and publicly disclosed.
Furthermore, we are curious about the extent of the PDM’s engagement with the GH2 Namibia programme. In all our years, we have never witnessed a scenario where a mere advisor assumes the role of a central decision-making authority in any country. The implications of such a transition are far-reaching, and it is within our rights as a concerned political party to seek clarity on this matter,” asked the politician.
“The GH programme will utilise funding from development partners and if needed, the Namibian government to bolster the ministry’s efforts in realising the goals of the Namibian hydrogen and derivatives strategy,” the energy ministry stated.
According to Mnyupe, the pprogramme aims to harness the incredible potential of green hydrogen as a cornerstone of the nation’s sustainable energy mix. By leveraging renewable resources, he said Namibia is committed to driving economic growth, reducing carbon emissions and ensuring energy security for generations to come.
“We invite professionals, experts and enthusiasts from various disciplines to join us. The office is expected to profile eight executive positions within the programme,” said Mnyupe.
