The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) and Whale Rock Cement (operating as Cheetah Cement) recently concluded successful negotiations which resulted in a 6% wage increase for members of the bargaining unit. The Chinese-owned cement manufacturer is situated just outside Otjiwarongo.

The increase was inked last week, and will also see a rise in the housing allowance and additional fringe benefits for workers. “This achievement was made possible through collaborative efforts with the MUN’s northern regional leadership, and underscores the importance of unity and cooperation in advancing the interests of our members’’, said MUN branch chairperson Naftal Nghipitwako in an interview with New Era.

“Under this landmark agreement, all members of the MUN employed at Whale Rock Cement will receive a 6% increase on their wages, providing them with a well-deserved increase in recognition of their hard work and dedication”, he stated. 

“This collaboration exemplifies the strength that comes from unity and solidarity within the labour movement. We extend our sincere gratitude to Whale Rock Cement’s negotiating team for their commitment to fostering good industrial relations and the fair treatment of their employees. Whale Rock Cement’s willingness to engage in open and constructive dialogue has paved the way for this mutually-beneficial agreement, which will significantly improve the lives of our members and their families”, Nghipitwako beamed. 

“This agreement stands as a testimony to the effectiveness of dialogue and partnership between labour unions and employers”, he said, further giving the assurance that the MUN remains dedicated to advocating for the rights and welfare of its members.
