Opuwo Town Council maintains status quo

OPUWO - The Opuwo Town Council on Tuesday re-elected its councillors in their various positions.

In an election held at the town council chambers, Rosa Mbinge-Tjeundo, a Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) councillor, retained her mayoral position after accepting an unopposed nomination from fellow party member Kaare Lucius Mupya.

Kasipo Kakondo, a fellow PDM councillor, will deputise Mbinge-Tjeundo.

Mupya was re-elected as the management committee’s chairperson, while PDM’s Forester Matjiru Tjijahura and Swapo veteran Wilhelmine Nashihua were both re-elected as additional members of the management committee.

Swapo members Victorino Simon and Ruth Nderura will continue to serve as regular council members.

Opuwo district magistrate Eden Kuneni Amutenya swore in the councillors.

During her acceptance speech, Mbinge-Tjeundo reiterated her commitment to serving residents, stating that she will do it with diligence and integrity to the best of her abilities.

“As your mayor, I am committed to fostering unity and collaboration to ensure that every voice is heard and every member of our community is considered,” the mayor promised.

She said the town has water, land and housing concerns, but she believes in the tenacity and fortitude of the people of Opuwo to overcome these challenges.

“Together, we can address these challenges, and transform them into opportunities for growth and development. I am dedicated to working tirelessly to enhance the quality of life for all residents, ensuring that our town remains a place we are proud to call home,” she added.

Mbinge-Tjeundo said her tenure will thus be guided by transparency, accountability and inclusivity.
