Oshakati waives interest for all

OSHAKATI – The Oshakati Town Council has moved swiftly, passing a resolution last month to waive all interests accumulated on municipal services it renders to residents.

The council is owed N$80.2 million by residents and businesses.

This was confirmed by the town council’s spokesperson Katarina Kamari on Monday.

She said the arrangement will run for 10 months, effective from September 2023 until June 2024.

From now until June next year, “no interests will be charged on all municipal accounts.

“This decision was taken by the council to encourage all account holders to be able to honour paying their municipal services and allow all clients with accounts in arrears to be able to pay off their debt,” Kamari said.

She added: “The waiving of interests on accounts is also applicable to all municipal accounts including residential, schools, businesses, non-profit organisations, community-based organisations, churches, government and parastatals.”

Last year, the same local authority took a decision to waive interests accumulated on pensioners’ accounts.

Council have been receiving requests from customers who are in debt, for this decision to be applicable to all account holders, and not only pensioners.

“Residents are, therefore, urged to honour their municipal accounts as revenue collection is very important, it permits development in town,” she said.
