OTJOZOHUNGU - The Gebedsplaas San Self-Help Project at Otjozohungu in the Omaheke region was handed over to the San community on Thursday.

The project, operating from the Otjombinde constituency, is an employment scheme for the San community sponsored by the Social Security Commission (SSC) and Omaheke Regional Council.

It helps community members to establish dairy and welding enterprises, in so doing providing them with employment opportunities.

During the official handover of the project, Otjombinde constituency councillor Wenzel Kavaka said the project’s goal is to shape the characters of the San people and enhance their self-esteem.

“We recognise the incredible impact this initiative has had on the San community and the community of Otjozohungu at large since its inception. One of the cornerstones of a thriving society is gainful employment. It enhances the social fabric of our community, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and included,” Kavaka said.

He also highlighted the ripple effect of such schemes on education and skills development.

“They are the foundation upon which we build a stronger, more resilient, and closely-knit community. As we celebrate this handover, let us renew our commitment to creating more opportunities, fostering growth, and ensuring a brighter future for every member of our beloved San community,” Kavaka said.

SSC chief executive officer Milka Mungunda, in a speech delivered on her behalf, said the project reflects the commission’s commitment to enhancing the lives of Namibians, addressing unemployment, and improving livelihoods, particularly for those affected by multidimensional poverty.

“As we reflect on the enterprise’s journey, it is heartening to note that the SSC’s funding primarily went into essential components such as skills development and physical infrastructure,” she added.

The Gebedsplaas San Self Help Project has received N$2 223 000 in funding from the SSC Development Fund and the Omaheke Regional Council since 2018.
