Wentzel duo bags second consecutive Desert Classic

The 2023 Nedbank Desert Classic saw defending champions, Jordan and Kevin Wentzel cement their names in the history books of the competition as one of the first-ever father-and-son teams to score back-to-back wins.

The 2023 Nedbank Desert Classic, dubbed ‘Namibia’s Major’, took place on 28-29 December 2023, at the Rossmund Golf Course in Swakopmund. A record-breaking 164 players took on the challenge making it the biggest field since the inception of the series.

Father-and-son partnership of Kevin Wentzel and Jordan Wentzel, aged 49 and 13 respectively, won the tournament with 93 points, followed by Christopher Durant and Wouter Maske in second place with 92 points, while Borris Erasmus and Grant Mather took third place with 91 points.

Speaking on behalf of DZ Golf, the organising team of the Nedbank Desert Classic, was Dan Zwiebel, who said: “What a fantastic two days of golf. We broke our attendance record this year by having 164 players take part in the tournament.

We are extremely grateful to all the teams that made this possible. A special thanks to our main sponsors, Nedbank Namibia and Hollard Namibia, all our supporting sponsors, and the organising teams for making this event great and a special way to close off 2023,” he said.

Nedbank Namibia’s Head of Marketing and Communications, Gernot de Klerk, thanked all the teams for taking part in the tournament.

“At Nedbank Namibia, we truly pride ourselves in ensuring that we contribute not only to the golf fraternity within our sphere of influence but to the entire country through competitions like the Nedbank Desert Classic.

We are crafting an unforgettable brand experience by ensuring that Namibia’s Major, the Nedbank Desert Classic, creates lasting connections within the golf community to elevate the significance of the sport in Namibia. Hosting the biggest golf event to cap off another fantastic sporting year just underpins why Nedbank remains golf’s greatest partner in Namibia. Congratulations to the winners and teams that took part in the showpiece event over the two days; we hope to see you again in the 2024 edition of the tournament,” De Klerk concluded.
