LUDERITZ -The inaugural edition of the Mayoral Cup, recently held in the habour town of Luderitz, proved a huge success and organisers have indicated their plans to make it an annual event.

Office of the Luderitz Mayor availed an amount of N$18 000 to assist organisers, host and adequately promote the event. A total of 8 football teams, 2 netball teams, 4 volleyball teams participated in the event, while some kiddies bicycling activities were also in the offing – all in search of top honors in the various categories.

The tourney also aims to promote sports and physical fitness within the community, while also according the area’s youth a chance to try their hands at something positive rather than spending their useful time on unproductive activities.

In the football category, Atlantic Stars scoop top honours and pocketed a handsome amount of N$5 000 accompanied by a floating trophy and 18 gold medals. In 2nd place was the Luderitz Town Council who walked away with N$2 500 and 18 silver medals, while Novanam came in at 3rd place and had to be satisfied with consolation prize money of N$1 000 and 18 bronze medals.

In Netball, Buchters Netball Club were the deserving winners in that category and took home N$3 000, a floating trophy and 12 gold medals, while the Luderitz Junior Secondary School claimed 2nd place to walk away with N$1 500 and 12 silver medals.

Meanwhile, the Luderitz Namibian Police won the Volleyball category and in the process pocketed a cool N$3 000 accompanied by a floating trophy and 12 gold medals, while the Luderitz Town Council finished 2nd to claim N$1 500 and 10 silver medals, and 3rd place went the Luderitz Junior Secondary School who received N$500 and 10 bronze medals.
