Personality of the week - Next generation of netball talent - Garbers

Most disappointing match of your career so far: I don’t specifically have a most disappointing match. I always try to improve my performance from matches that we’ve lost.

Your toughest match: My toughest match is the one we played against Stellenberg High School in Pretoria earlier this year during our annual school tour.

Most memorable match:  It was when we played against Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool in Pretoria during the same school tour. It was quite a good experience.

Biggest influence on your career: The biggest influence on my career has probably been my mother (also my coach), as she always encourages me to become the best that I can be.

How long have you been playing, and what inspired you to start playing netball?

I’ve been playing netball for almost 10 years now – since I was six years old. My three sisters, all of whom played netball, inspired me to take up the sport. I mainly play and prefer goal shooter – but every now and then, I enjoy the goal attack position too.

Can you share a memorable achievement or highlight from your career so far?

A memorable achievement in my career so far is the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup, in which I recently participated. With the help of my amazing team, we (Khomas) were able to take the cup. I also got chosen for the U/19 national squad.

How do you balance your netball commitments with your academic or other extracurricular activities?

I’m able to balance a life of sport with academics. Netball practice is usually twice a week, and mainly on weekends as well. However, academics are a top priority.

What are your short-term and long-term goals as a netball player, both individually and as part of a team? My overall goal as a netball
player is to reach my full potential wherever that may be.

What’s your take on the current state of Namibian netball, compared to countries such as South Africa and Malawi?

In my opinion, netball in Namibia is not taken as seriously, and it isn’t as developed
as netball in South Africa. Netball in
Namibia must become an internationally- recognised sport like rugby.
