Industry Loop – Hi, we are Namibian, and we have an addiction

The international season is officially upon us. The international season is when we see an influx of South African celebrities to the country. The international season is where we once again demonstrate that we love anything and everything but Namibian.

Look, at this point…it is what it is. This is not a lecture or a scolding. They say bend the tree while it’s still young. You cannot and will not do that with a 35-year-old country. It’s too late to change our love for everything foreign at this “advanced” age. What we can do on Industry Loop, though…is sensitise you and guide you during this international season. I cringe at how we behave as Namibians around these South African celebrities.

So here is your friendly guide from someone who deeply cares about thy fellow countrymen. First things first, the dearest event organisers responsible for booking the foreign contingent…please ensure that they populate their social platforms with their Namibian experience. Nothing is more embarrassing than seeing a South African celebrity in the country that shares nothing about their time here.

It just feels like a big, fat, curvy middle finger to all 3 million of us. Are we not worth a post or a few stories on socials? Are we an afterthought? Like we had to beg this MF to come. I mean, yeah, we begged, but for legalising polygamy’s sake, do not make it that obvious. FYI, no event organiser will book a foreign act if there is no demand for that act to be here. So yes, we begged. A young post and a few stories on Instagram about us and our country won’t get the Western Sahara its independence from the claws of Morocco, but at least it will make us feel better about our addiction to foreign.

Secondly, I sincerely ask that when a Namibian entertainer opens before the foreign act steps up… at least spaza support your fellow Namibian for NAMCOR’s sake. Don’t let that Mzansi fo sho go home thinking that we do not support our own. I mean, yes, we don’t support our own, but we should not be making that sh*t obvious to outsiders. Let’s spaza support tog and still go ham when our addiction comes on stage.

Lastly, please make peace with the fact that you will most likely not get a picture with your addiction. Make peace with the fact that you will be stuck in general access with an Android. Do not try to wiggle your way past security. Do not now try to get on stage. Do not now try to “offer“ yourself. We know these things. Stop it. Sies! You are grown. We are grown. Let’s enjoy the international season but with a bit of restraint asb.
