The recent spat between Afrikaans rappers Ixa and DiChef has me convinced that we are a nation of hypocrites. I think at this point…we just need to own up and accept it. Listen, I’ve always said that I will have more respect for someone who owns up to their manure ways. That comes with a high level of self-awareness. As a country, we will clock 35 on the 21st of March.
Your usual 35-year-old should by that age already be aware of their drawbacks and red flags. A 35-year-old should proudly understand who they are. Their strengths, their weakness, their bad habits, their vices. By the age of 35…you should accept yourself for who you are. The same should be true for Namibian society. We are hypocrites, let’s accept it, let’s embrace it. Let it be part of our value proposition when presenting ourselves to the world.
I say this because Hip Hop is Hip Hop. Be it Afrikaans or English…or Rukwangali, It’s Hip Hop. The ethos of Hip Hop is straightforward. When someone says some sh*t about you in a diss song…you either reply with a diss song or concede that the person was right about whatever they said in that diss song and off you go with the tail between your legs. It really is that simple.
Yes, beef came with violence in the earliest era of Hip Hop. However,…in modern times, no one is sitting there and advocating for violence. If they are advocating for violence, they should be arrested and charged for incitement and face the full wrath of the law. The ethos still remain. The only difference is that in today’s times…it’s without the violence. In today’s times, it’s about receipts and lyrical prowess. It really is not about Facebook posts.
In case you missed the drama…Afrikaans rapper, Ixa dropped a diss song calling out all rappers who hate on him and specifically name-dropped his longtime friend and music partner, DiChef. It came as a surprise to many because the two grew up together and broke into the industry as “Brazse Fani Mic” with Salvador Deezy (now Salvador Mouers) as the third member.
In the song, Ixa is urging DiChef to “confess” to what he “did” and that he seemingly has skeletons in his “R-Kelly” closet. DiChef initially ignored the diss.
Up until this year when DiChef responded with a Facebook post where he called me out for “pushing an agenda” and “inciting” beef. He followed it up with another Facebook post responding to Ixa’s post in which Ixa dropped receipts of a voice note that seemingly sparked the rift.
Yes, DiChef I have an agenda, I do. My agenda is Team Namibia, I’ve always been an extremist when it comes to Team Namibia. I’ve always advocated for Namibian content. My work lives freely on the internet. If I can get Namibians to talk and amplify Namibians…I will die a happy man. But that’s not the case right now. The broader Namibian society could not give a rat’s a** about Namibian content. Namibians love foreign content in all facets.
So, in this case…keeping in mind the ethos of Hip Hop, if I can get Namibians to talk about this Afrikaans rap beef the same way Namibians spoke enthusiastically at length in private and public forums about the Kendrick vs Drake beef…again, I will die a happy chap.
That’s the hypocrisy that I’m talking about. This same Namibia with its Hip-Hop industry was all over the Kendrick vs Drake beef. Everyone had an opinion. Everybody was either sharing, tweeting or debating about that beef. Now that’s hitting home with Ixa and DiChef, we must talk about peace and it’s not worth it and NSK has an agenda and inciting division.
Lol…come on man, but like I said, perhaps it’s time we accept that we are a nation of hypocrites. If we do that… then I will gladly drop my extreme Team Namibia agenda. For your information…being Team Namibia does not mean d*ck riding. Team Namibia’s agenda means talking and amplifying both comfortable and uncomfortable conversations about Namibians by Namibians.
My hope really is that DiChef goes back to the basics of Hip Hop. Get in the booth. Drop your reply and let the lyrical war take its rightful course. If not…well, welcome to 2025 where even Hip-Hop is now kama all about kumbaya. I rest my case.
Until the next Loop, we say #GMTM
