Familiarisation visits to different constituencies are considered to be part of the solution to help tackle challenges faced by the inhabitants of the sparsely populated Oshikoto Region.
For that reason the Oshikoto Regional Governor Henock Kankoshi embarked on a regional tour last month to personally meet with community members for them to air their problems and the challenges faced in their respective areas.
“Sometimes you will not know what exactly is bothering the people until you engage them. So meeting with people gives me the opportunity to hear first-hand information from the affected people, instead of channelled information as some leaders will not tell you what is really on the ground,” said Kankoshi.
He says during the recent visits to the different constituencies he noted that some people were still without identification documents, something which he was not previously aware of.
“With regard to the IDs I asked some leaders to compile a list of all those that don’t have identification so that we can take it to the Ministry of Home Affairs on their behalf. Some of these challenges need urgent solutions on the spot,” elucidated the regional governor.
“All those issues that are being raised will be noted and later a report will be compiled so that they can be dealt with accordingly and treated with priority,” stressed Kankoshi.
He also urged tenderpreneurs to commit themselves to employing local people, instead of bringing employees from somewhere else, while the local community faces high unemployment with some of the jobless being youth with skills, who could be harnessed by tenderpreneurs.
“This will attract investors to the region. There are abundant human resources, making it easy for jobs to be done,” added Kankoshi.
He said he would like to see most of the rural areas being supplied with electricity so that they can also be in line for national development.
Kankoshi however noted that most of the councillors are still new so it will take a bit of time before changes are seen.
