Inmate attempts suicide at Karasburg

KEETMANSHOOP – The police in the ||Kharas region are investigating a case in which a 25-year-old inmate allegedly attempted suicide at the Karasburg Police Station holding cells.

According to Namibian Police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi in the weekend crime report, the incident occurred around 17h33 on Saturday.

“The inmate attempted to commit suicide by overdosing on tablets. He was rushed to Karasburg District Hospital for medical attention, whereafter he was transferred to Keetmanshoop State Hospital for further treatment,” she said.

Elsewhere in the ||Kharas region on Friday, two men, both aged 34, were arrested after the vehicle they were travelling in was searched and 411 grams of cannabis were discovered.

The men were arrested around 18h50 about five kilometres outside Keetmanshoop along the Vaalgras-Koës road. The cannabis was valued at N$20 550 and the suspects were charged with dealing in prohibited drugs.

Also on Friday, at the Oranjemund border post, a 23-year-old Namibian was arrested after the vehicle he was driving was searched and 20 grams of cannabis valued at N$1 000 was found under his seat.

“The suspect was entering Namibia from the Republic of South Africa at the time of arrest,” the police report stated. In Tseiblaagte, Keetmanshoop on Saturday around 08h30, a 23-year-old man was arrested after he was searched and found in possession of 21 grams of cannabis valued at N$1 050.

The two suspects were also charged with dealing in prohibited drugs.

All suspects are expected to appear in court this week.
