The much-anticipated Inter-Mine Sport Games kick off today, and end tomorrow at the Vegkop, Eros Primary School Stadium as well as the Windhoek Country Club and Resorts Golf Club in Windhoek.
A key event on the Namibian mining industry’s calendar, the Games were paused during the global financial crisis due to financial constraints faced by the mines.
However, the event was reintroduced in 2022 by Swakop Uranium.
It has since been revitalised as a collaborative effort, coordinated through the Chamber of Mines.
With a rich history in the mining industry, the Games are more than a sporting event.
They are a platform for identifying and nurturing national sporting talent across various disciplines.
The Games also foster unity among industry employees.
This year’s fixtures promise exciting competitions in football, netball, volleyball, pool, chess, darts and golf.
Participating companies include DebMarine Namibia, B2Gold Namibia, Osino Resources, Namdeb, Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation, the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology, Swakop Uranium, QKR Navachab Gold, Andrada Mining, Sinomine, Whale Rock, Rössing, Trigon Mining and Lewcor.
A highlight of the event will be the street parade today, starting at 07h30.
Teams will march from the Windhoek police station through Independence Avenue, past Zoo Park, and along Fidel Castro Street, culminating at Vegkop Stadium.
“On behalf of our host partners, we cordially invite all stakeholders and interested parties to join us during these two exciting days of sporting fun, brought to you by our mining industry. While attending, you are welcome to support the vendors’ stalls, which are open to the public,” the organisers stated.
