Ipinge strikes gold at Angola’s Independence boxing tourney

Namibian boxer Gebhard Ipinge delivered a standout performance at the recent international boxing tournament held in Luanda, Angola as part of that country’s 50th independence celebrations.

Ipinge, part of a Namibian delegation comprising five pugillists, a coach, and a team manager, beat Angola’s Adriano Kiana in the semi-final to book a place in the final, where he then outclassed Zimbabwe’s Kimbini Takudzwa by unanimous decision on Sunday to claim the gold medal for Namibia.

“I am really happy with my performance and look forward to future competitions,” Ipinge said after the bout.

Other Namibian boxers faced stiff competition. Petrus Festus Ishongwa lost to Angola’s Buica Francisco in a preliminary bout, while in the semi-finals on 23 May, Petrus Jacobus Kotze was subdued by Angola’s Nzuzii. Israel Hamunyela fell to Carlos Luyanda of Angola, and Ipuleni Josua lost to Avelino Luzito, also of Angola.

The tournament brought together top boxing talent from across the region, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Angola, South Africa, Mozambique and Namibia. It also brought in officials from Botswana, Congo, Namibia and Angola.

Namibia’s team manager and president of the Namibia Boxing Federation Jeremia Ndjembo commented:

“I commend all our boxers and officials for their courageous performances and commitment to representing Namibia with pride. Boxing continues to deliver; our athletes never come back empty-handed,” said Ndjembo.

He also expressed gratitude to the Angolan Boxing Federation for their hospitality: “We extend our heartfelt thanks for covering flight tickets, accommodation and meals for our entire delegation. This tournament provided valuable international exposure and competitive experience for our elite boxers.” – lmupetami@nepc.com.na
