Jacobs resigns as Tigers coach after disappointing results

Jacobs resigns as Tigers coach after disappointing results

Former Ramblers, Orlando Pirates and Black Africa coach Woody Jacobs announced his resignation from the head coach position at Tigers Football Club on Monday after a challenging six months with the team.

He, who had joined the club in August 2024, and leaves the team following a season that saw less-than-expected results.

The outspoken Jacobs, who also coaches Namibia’s senior women’s national side, the Brave Gladiators, had been brought in with high hopes to lead Tigers back to prominence in Namibian football.

The coach was initially contracted for one year, with the expectation of a renewal.

With the club’s performances falling short of expectations, he opted to step down.

Before joining Tigers, he had a stint at Matebele Football Club in April 2024.

He had previously managed Francistown-based Tafic C.

His mandate upon arrival at Tigers was clear: restore the club to its rightful place, and guide them back to the top of Namibian football after their underwhelming fourth-place finish in the 2023/2024 season, where they accumulated 43 points from 30 matches.

However, Jacobs admitted that the team’s results under his leadership had not been up to par.

“The club only managed to collect seven points from a possible 18,” he stated.

“We, as coaches, are in a results-driven business. When those results are not forthcoming, it is in the best interest to vacate the head coach position, as the main responsibility is to ensure the team gets those results,” he remarked.

Despite his resignation, he expressed pride in his efforts.

“I leave with my head held high, knowing that I tried everything in my power to help the team. But it wasn’t good enough. I wish the team, the coaches, players and supporters all the best,” he stated.

At the time of his resignation, Tigers were sitting in ninth place in the Debmarine Premier League standings after six matches.

The team had won two, drawn one, and lost three of their games.

With the league set to resume this weekend, there is uncertainty surrounding who will take over the managerial duties at the club.

Tigers will face Blue Waters on Saturday at 17h00, and Blue Boys on Sunday at 13h00.

Both fixtures are crucial for the team as they look to recover from a disappointing start to the
season.
