SWAKOPMUND –  The Rössing Uranium Board of Directors has appointed Johannes !Gawaxab, as director and chairman of Rössing Uranium Board. !Gawaxab’s  term already started on Monday, September 1, 2014.

He was appointed following the retirement of Rehabeam Hoveka, who served as the chairperson of the Rössing Board since  April 1, 2008.

According to a statement released this week by the uranium mine, expectations are that !Gawaxab with his intensive business knowledge and experience will lead the mine to new heights in the current challenging uranium market.

Rössing’s Managing Director, Werner Duvenhage welcomed !Gawaxab on behalf of Rössing Uranium’s employees and shareholders saying the company is looking forward to working with !Gawaxab who has made  remarkable strides in the business industry.

Duvenhage also extended his appreciation to the outgoing, Rehabeam Hoveka for his in-depth knowledge and experience of the operations that he brought to the company since joining them in 2008.

 “We are very thankful to Hoveka. His guidance and leadership have been particularly valuable as Rössing expanded its business during strong uranium price and later weathered our operations against the declining uranium price,” Duvenhage said.

 Incoming chairman, !Gawaxab has a successful track record in the business industry and has worked across various functions and jurisdictions, which include finance, commercial, planning, strategy and operations in Namibia, the UK and Ireland, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Malawi. 

Since 2006 !Gawaxab has held the position of Managing Director Africa Operations of Old Mutual. Prior to this he was the CEO of Old Mutual Namibia, Chief Executive Officer of Old Mutual Asset Managers Namibia and Chief Executive Officer of Old Mutual Employee Benefits Namibia. Before joining Old Mutual, !Gawaxab held the position of General Manager of Air Namibia. 

He serves as chairman of the national oil company of Namibia, NAMCOR, and on the Board of Ohorongo Cement. He chairs the Board of Old Mutual in Kenya, Nigeria and Zimbabwe and serves on the board of Old Mutual Namibia.
