Johannes to miss 10km Spar Challenge

Home National Johannes to miss 10km Spar Challenge

The highly-anticipated annual 10km Spar Challenge, which is exclusively reserved for women this year, is set to take place in Windhoek on 23 April.

It will, unfortunately, see the country’s top marathoner Helalia Johannes missing in action.

The veteran runner’s coach Robert Kaxuxwena confirmed that Johannes will not partake as the event is not part of their planned activities for the year. Therefore, it makes it hard for the athlete to properly prepare.

“Moreover, we are uncertain about our participation in the other editions of Spar marathons in South Africa as well,” he stated.

Despite Johannes’ absence, preparations for the event are well underway, and organiser Berthold Karumendu said registration has been completed at all Spar locations across the country, while online entries remain available.

He encouraged more women to register for the event before the end of this month as late registrations may cause hiccups.

“We are pleased to report that preparations for the event are progressing smoothly, and we are anticipating a significant turnout on 23 April,” he added.

“This event is a significant fixture on the Namibian sports calendar, and is sure to be a highlight of the year. This year’s event is particularly special because it aims to empower women in sports, and promote a healthy lifestyle among them. This unique focus is sure to attract more participants and a substantial turnout, and we are excited to see the impact it will have on the communities,” Karumendu said.
