Karate tourney to expose young karatekas

Karate tourney to expose young karatekas

The Namibia Karate Federation (NKF) is set to host its first event of the year in Swakopmund, serving as a curtain-raiser for the federation’s packed 2025 calendar. An NKF representative Llewellyn Manale said the event will bring together all member affiliates nationwide.

It will take place from 23 to 24 April.  However, it will not serve as a qualifier for any major local or international competition.

“There won’t be prize money for this tournament, but it will mark the official start of our 2025 karate calendar, which will be filled with events as the year progresses. All affiliated members are expected to participate. We will use this event to assess their fitness levels,” he said.

Regarding preparations, he added: “I know teams are currently preparing for the Region 5 Games later this year, meaning karatekas are also working tirelessly to stay in shape before the tournament”.

“I have engaged with various coaches and officials across the country. They are eagerly anticipating the new karate season. With the Region 5 Games happening this year, we believe this tournament could help uncover new talent,” Manale added.

Seasoned karate official Freddy Mwiya highlighted the importance of such tournaments for up-and-coming athletes.

He noted that these competitions provide a valuable opportunity to test their skills.

“I think this is an important tournament, especially since it is open to everyone. The key difference between training and actual competition is experience. Stepping onto the competition floor is a huge opportunity for young athletes looking to make their mark in the world of karate,” he added.
