Next week Monday, the European Commission will hold a prize-giving ceremony at Europe House for the International Drawing Competition on Gender Equality, which was launched in March by European Commissioner Benita-Ferrero Waldner on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

This was announced in a press statement by the European Commission’s Aude Guignard.

According to Guignard, ten drawings from children aged between 8 and 10 were pre-selected and sent to Brussels.

Out of these, Katja Majania, a pupil of Sikanduko Primary School in the Kavango Region, won first prize in the ACP (Africa, Caribbean and Pacific) region.

“Her drawing entitled ‘My first day at school my friend was a boy’ was selected from 447 drawings sent to Brussels by 48 delegations.

“In Namibia, Katja’s drawing was among the 10 drawings pre-selected among 235 submissions from 13 schools in a total of eight regions,” she said.

The Namibian jury members for the pre-selection were Minister Nangolo Mbumba, Deputy Minister Dr Becky Ndjoze-Ojo, Veronica de Klerk, Nicky Marais, Joseph Madisia, Papa Shikongeni and ambassador Elisabeth Pape, Head of Delegation of the Delegation of the European Communities to Namibia..

“The aim of this competition, geared towards children of third world countries that enjoy the support of the European Union, was to make children participate in an awareness exercise on the role of women in society. This competition, which took place in 61 countries worldwide, in five regions throughout three continents, is in line with other European Union actions, supporting activities and initiatives aiming to promote gender equality,” she said.
