The 32-year-old man who stands accused of stabbing a 40-year-old man to death in Keetmanshoop on Sunday, has been denied bail in the magistrate’s court.
Alex Vincent Jossob on Tuesday made his first court appearance before Magistrate Unchen Konjore.
Konjore postponed the case to 8 May 2025 for further police investigations, and for the accused to obtain legal representation.
Jossob, during the court proceedings, indicated that he would seek the services of a private lawyer.
State representative Godfrey Shivolo strongly objected to the granting of bail in the matter, saying the accused faces a serious charge which carries a heavy custodial sentence, and the State fears that the accused will not return to court if granted bail.
“There is a huge public interest in this matter, and it is not in the interest of the administration
of justice for bail to be granted because of the escalation of brutal and cruel cases such as this. We also state that this offence was premeditated, and the accused carefully planned this offence before committing it,” he added.
The magistrate advised the accused person to submit a formal bail application if he wishes to be released on bail. Jossob was remanded in custody at the Keetmanshoop police holding cells until his next court appearance.
It is alleged that he caused Alfred Gariseb’s death when he stabbed him on the left side of his chest and in the back with a butcher knife. Gariseb died on the spot.
Police alleged that the two men had argued over text messages found on the accused’s girlfriend’s phone.
The incident occurred around 01h00 on Sunday at a local bar in the Tseiblaagte residential area.
