The Regional Governor of //Kharas Lucia Basson was overwhelmed after her office received five tonnes of fish from Seaflower Group last Wednesday. The fish, valued at N$122,500, was donated as part of the group’s corporate social responsibility.

In her short statement on receiving the donation – which will be allocated to needy people in the region – Basson thanked the company for their kind gesture and the fulfilment of their social responsibility. She called on other companies to also give back to the communities in which they operate.

“I appreciate it, as you have fulfilled your social responsibility,” she said. She however urged companies to change from donating goods in kind to direct financial support that will make a meaningful difference to the lives of people in times of need.

She said that people flock to her office in search of various kinds of assistance, and a financial boost from private companies to her office would ensure that the most needy people get assistance, according to their specific needs.
“We should try to give financial support to governors’ offices so that we can assist people in need from time to time,” she noted.

Handing over the donation was Seaflower Group’s goodwill ambassador, Maria Nepembe, who said the company’s social responsibility fund was created with the aim of aiding government in the fight against poverty and hunger.
“The Seaflower group of companies believes that no Namibian should go to bed on an empty stomach. Therefore, we always strive to play our part in feeding the needy,” she said.

Nepembe said as a child growing up in the village there were times when they didn’t have enough to eat and she made it a point that she should join the fight against hunger and poverty when she grows up, hence her partnership with Seaflower.

“I believe that this is a smart partnership that should be replicated in all parts of the country by other companies so that every person has something to eat,” she said.

Another consignment of 2,2 tonnes of fish will be donated to people living in the capital, with another 5 tonnes earmarked for Omuthiya.
