By Kuvee Kangueehi WINDHOEK The Khomas Region says the decision of Athletics Namibia is final, binding on members and should be respected. In a media release the Khomas Region, which tabled a motion of no-confidence in the AN leadership led by Alpha Kangueehi, said the fact that no region supported the motion means that the AN membership is happy with the AN leadership. The Khomas Region tabled the motion last weekend at the AN Extra-Ordinary Congress at Rundu. In the media statement, the Khomas Region, which is one of the biggest regions in the sport code, said the motion was not supported by any other region, thus falling flat and there was no voting on the matter. The media statement claims that Khomas was of the opinion that athletics affairs were not run properly and therefore moved a motion of no-confidence in the AN president. The release says the motion was forwarded to the AN Secretary General way ahead of time and was shared with other regions. The regions claim that the issue of which region moved the motion becomes irrelevant as everybody is henceforth affected by the decision taken by AN. Khomas said as a legal entity and juristic person, Khomas will concentrate on strengthening its structures to empower its athletes. Athletics Namibia comprises the Khomas, Oshana, Caprivi, Kavango, North Central and Erongo regions. Nampa reports that Isack Hamaata of the Khomas Region said Khomas will focus its energies on strengthening its programmes and empowering athletes registered under its affiliated clubs. Asked whether Khomas will avail athletes to compete in national teams called up by Athletics Namibia, Hamata said it would be a disgrace to refuse athletes the opportunity to take part in national team activities if they qualify to do so. He emphasised that the fact that the motion of no-confidence did not go through did not mean that Khomas would cease its activities. He said Khomas was an entity on its own that was entitled to run its own programmes in the interest of its clubs and athletes. According to Hamata, Khomas prided itself on being the only region that regularly hosted events and would therefore continue to do so. Speaking to Nampa on enquiry on Sunday, AN President Alpha Kangueehi said the five regions of Erongo, Kavango, Caprivi, Oshikoto and Oshana rejected the vote of no-confidence passed by the Khomas Region. Kangueehi has thus called on the leadership of Khomas to work hand in hand with the leadership and other regions in the development of athletics. He said the priority was and still is the development of athletics and that should not be compromised at all. The congress held at the Rundu Community Hall witnessed the new membership from Otjozondjupa, Hardap and Omusati which brought the total number of affiliates to nine. The congress has mandated the AN leadership to finalize the outstanding audit reports of 2002/03 and 2003/04 by 23 July this year. Kangueehi said the reports needed were under a different leadership whom the current AN executive has requested to submit the outstanding supporting documents. He said failure to do so would leave the AN executive with no choice but to report the matter to the Anti Corruption Commission or the Namibian Police (NamPol).
