Khorixas painter calls for support towards arts

Karl Namaseb, a 29-year-old painter who began painting in grade five, earns little to nothing from his artwork but continues to pursue his passion.

Drawing inspiration from his father, who was also a painter, Namaseb discovered his calling through art, stating that art is a means through which he expresses himself and connects with others.

“If only people could take art seriously in our region. I could make a living out of my paintings. Art is a way to express myself and connect with others,” Namaseb said.

Born and raised in Khorixas, Kunene region, Namaseb hopes that Namibians develop an interest in the art scene and support struggling artists. Namaseb states that his art reflects thought, emotion, and stories. As an artist, he feels unique and special, creating work that impacts his fellow people.

“Many people do not know or appreciate artworks and the artists, and they do not buy any of my artworks,” he said.

He mostly sells his art pieces to tourists passing through Khorixas. Namaseb negotiates the prices of his artwork and eventually settles for any amount the customer can offer. Namaseb admitted to this publication that he struggles to sell his artwork to locals.

He is currently unemployed and relies heavily on the sale of his art pieces to make a living.

Despite his financial difficulties, he is determined not to give up on his dream of owning an art studio full of his artwork. He follows various talented painters and artists on social media to improve his skills.

“I do have the creative vibe in me, and I am also motivated by other painters I see on social media,” Namaseb said.

The artist hopes to share his skills and knowledge by offering art classes at schools.

“In the next five years, I want to give art classes at schools,” he said.

In his spare time, Namaseb gathers young children in his yard to create art using clean sheets of paper and paint. The painter urges young and aspiring painters to keep creating, experimenting, and sharing their artwork, whether or not they earn income. He also called on Namibians to support his art in any way they can.
