The Oshakati-based Kilimandjaro boxing club is preparing for the innovative annual Mvula Trophy boxing tournament slated for the 19th of this month at the Mvula Nyango sports complex in Oshakati.

Defending champions and hosts Kilimandjaro boxing club is expected to field the majority of its leading protégés in a bid to vigorously defend its titles against teams from Kunene, Erongo, Khomas, //Karas and the four northern regions.

Kilimandjaro won the inaugural edition of the annual boxing bonanza during the Mvula Nyango boxing tourney in September last year.

The club’s managing director Joseph Benhard, who doubles as head coach, concurred that the tourney is expecting mosquito junior boxers from different weight categories right up to the super heavyweight.

“We are expecting 42 boxers to partake in bouts,” said Benhard. The overall winner will walk away with a trophy, while boxers winning their respective bouts will each receive a gold medal.

Losers are guaranteed to walk away with consolation medals (silver and bronze). Benhard encouraged participating teams to enter boxers in all the different weight categories.

In addition, the former All Africa Games participant also called upon potential sponsors to come on board and support the noble venture.  Northern businessman Mvula Nyango is sponsoring the tourney to the tune of N$15 000.

“We have set a target of N$50 000 for the tourney, which will cover boxers’ transportation, accommodation and meals but we still don’t have sufficient funds yet,” Benhard said.
