Kilimanjaro boxer Michael Benhard extended his unbeaten run in the welterweight division when he defeated Andreas Nghinaunye in the main bout of the boxing bonanza, held at the Oshakati Independence stadium over the weekend.
He won by unanimous decision and in the process improved his record to nine wins from 10 fights with one draw.
Speaking to this publication yesterday, Benhard said the fight was not easy, as his one arm had not fully recovered from injury – but the fact that he had fought that opponent before helped him to win the match, as he knew what he was capable of.
“Great fight last night; I had one of my toughest fights to date, but I believe that was because of my arm, which was still recovering, so I had to operate with one at all times. I knew the guy and what he is capable of coming into the bout, which played a huge role in me scoring good points against him,” he said.
Benhard, however, added he is keen on fighting a continental opponent who can give him a tough time in the ring.
“I am just hoping that my promoter works something out and secures a fight for me with some of the continent’s best fighters. I have fought Namibians, and I can say I am ready to leave a mark outside the country and the world,” he added.
In the supporting main bout, Kareb Shitana eliminated Johannes Nangolo with a technical knockout in a heavyweight four-rounder bout, while Edison Nghipondoka defeated Nuuyoma December in a welterweight four-rounder.
In the junior lightweight, Edward Mbangu defeated Hafeni Johannes to claim victory, while Fabian Lamek drew against Shanyengange Shanyengane in a bantamweight fight.
Founder and coach of MTC Kilimanjaro Boxing Club Joseph Benhard said the bonanza lived up to their expectations, as it created a platform for upcoming boxers to showcase their talent.
He also called on other corporate sponsors to organise more such events, as it helps grow talent and keep youngsters away from indulging in social ills.
“We thank our sponsors for making this possible. Our goal has remained the same, which is to give a platform to young prospects and showcase their talent – and as a stable, we have the mandate to play a part in keeping kids away from the streets by making sure there are enough activities to keep them busy. I would surely say it was a success.”
