New councilors in various constituencies were sworn in after the recently concluded 2025 Regional Council and Local Authority elections, while some were re-elected in their roles around the country. New Era continues to feature the councillors in the upcoming weeks as detailed below:
Hardap Region
The Hardap Region has a total population of 106 680 [2023 Census]. The region’s capital is Mariental and it has 55 schools with a total of 21 886 pupils. Hardap has good infrastructure with well-developed road networks.
The region contains the municipality of Mariental, the towns of Rehoboth and Aranos, and the self-governed villages of Gibeon, Gochas, Kalkrand, Stampriet, and Maltahöhe. The Hardap Dam is located in the region. Hardap’s economy centers on agriculture, particularly small stock like sheep and goats and irrigated farming – mainly: lucerne, maize, grapes, vegetables from the Hardap Dam for local and export markets, alongside strong tourism driven by Sossusvlei, Sesriem Canyon, and water-based activities at the dam.
The region has been divided into eight constituencies, namely Aranos, Daweb, Gibeon, Mariental Rural, Mariental Urban, Rehoboth Rural, Rehoboth Urban East and Rehoboth Urban West.
