Soukous and rhumba maestro Koffi Olomidé will again have the crowd swinging their hips and stamping the ground when he takes to the stage at the Independence stadium on 22 October.
The famous Congolese cultural ambassador, real name Antoine Christophe Agbepa Mumba, last performed in Namibia in 2005.
Koffi (66) said in a video clip recently that he looks forward to entertaining the locals again.
The flamboyant Koffi’s music and dance speak to both young and old in his scheduled two-hour performance and will see him execute his most popular songs of all time. He released a new track and video titled ‘Apeleté’ just a few days ago.
The ‘Loi’ (Ndombolo) hitmaker has over 47 albums and several singles featuring several international artists including Diamond Platnumz, Tiwa Savage, and many more.
Project manager of the upcoming concert, Johanna Shiweda told VIBEZ! statistics show that more than 95% of Namibians listen to Dobolo/soukous music, and they intend to pull a crowd of more than 15 000 people to the event.
“We are excited to experience his live band and skilful 25-member team, comprising of his best dancers with heated waist-dancing skills,” shared Shiweda.
Koffi joined his mentor Papa Wemba in his band Viva la Musica, initially as a composer and songwriter and later as a lead vocalist in the 1970s. In 1986, he formed his band known as Quartier Latin International. He also popularised the slower style of Soukous, which he dubbed ‘Tcha Tcho’. His music can be quite controversial, taking on current events and topics considered taboo in some conservative societies.
He is a composer, arranger, producer and singer who can play the guitar and percussion.
The show will also see local talents such as Tate Buti, King Tee Dee, One Blood, Ethnix, PDK, Top Cheri, Exit, Adora, LeatherMein, Tswazis, Santiago, and DJ Vuyo performing. Disc Jockeys gracing the stage include DJ Yessonia, DJ What What, DJ Dla, DJ Siya and DaCosta the DJ.
To spice up the performances, the team has added 4×4 Too Much Power band as part of the performance.
The programme is starting at 13h00 until midnight.
A week later, Koffi will be vowing crowds at the National Stadium in Botswana on 29 October and in early November, he will start a tour of America.
