The Namibia Tennis Association’s (NTA) tournament director Larushka Kruger says the senior men’s tennis tournament held at the Central Tennis Court in Windhoek lived up to expectations.
The NTA hosted a tennis tournament at the weekend, which featured more than 15 participants in various categories. According to Kruger who formed part of the organising team, said the weekend’s tournament was different as it brought a fresh breath of air as various up and coming players got the opportunity to showcase their talents.
“Our top-ranked players were not available this weekend, and this gave an opportunity to those that are ranked lower to accumulate points and improve their ranking.
“Overall, the tournament was good and was very competitive. We had various players from across the country, and they all came up and showed their best skills,” said Kruger.
She added that the tournament was aimed at improving players’ ranking.
“With the International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments coming up, this also served as the qualifiers to those upcoming competitions. I believe giving younger players an opportunity was the best thing we did this weekend, because our goal is to provide equal opportunities to all the players to improve their rankings,” added Kruger. In the men’s singles category, Kendall Swartz came out tops, winning that division, followed by Ronaldo Uirab and Johan Theron in third position. In the doubles’ section, Dickson Phiri and Johan Theron dominated proceedings winning the doubles while Kendall Swartz and Oscar Muyambo came second. Their next competition will be on 26-27 July, which will be the NTA junior tournament. Kruger urged junior players to gear up for this upcoming tournament. – mkambukwe@nepc.com.na
