I would like to express my opinion on the issue regarding Namibia Student Financial Assistance Fund (NASFAF) loan repayments as a student at the University of Namibia (Unam).

It is very disappointing to note the SRCs and Namibia National Students Organisation (NANSO)’s new leadership are not being grateful to what government (NSFAF) is doing in this country.

What is this story of the SRCs and NANSO saying students should not repay the NSFAF loan money?

If they are to think out of the box, 80 percent of the students in Namibia are financially supported by the NSFAF.

Many parents in this country cannot financially afford for their kids to further their studies but thanks to the government assistance they are able to further their studies.

My fellow colleagues, if NSFAF financially assisted you then you have to repay the loan. President-elect Dr Hage Geingob stated if you agreed to take the loan and signed for it then you have to repay the money when you start working, because you signed a legal obligation to repay the money.

This will help the government to sustain the future students who might find themselves in the same financial problem that you used to be in and let us not be selfish because NSFAF was not established to assist you alone but the next person after you as well and the next person after that.

You students are being educated about the country’s Vision 2030, so the government is playing its part by assisting you, all you need to do is to play your part as well but if we don’t play our part then our country’s Vision 2030 won’t be achieved.

If the SRCs and NANSO want the NSFAF to convert the loans into grants then they should just directly say so but they cannot want to tell the students not to repay the loans. We Namibians must learn to appreciate every little thing that our government does in order to help us out in this country.
