ONGWEDIVA – A Grade 12 learner from Shikongo Iipinge Secondary School in the Omusati Region died on the spot when the car he was travelling in overturned on Saturday evening at around 19h00.

According to Sergeant Hisekiel Hamalwa of the Omusati police public relations division, the driver of a blue Toyota Hilux pick-up (bakkie) with the registration number N6125 of Outapi was transporting the learners to a social evening event of the Student Christian Movement (SCM) when he lost control over the vehicle at the Itananga-Omakange T-junction near Tsandi in the Omusati Region.  One of the boys died on the spot while nine others sustained serious injuries. It is alleged that one of the rear tyres of the vehicle burst causing the vehicle to overturn.  The vehicle was transporting 30 learners for the social evening function at Shaanika Secondary School in Okahao.

The deceased was identified as 19-year-old Shikongo Naftali from Ombafi, a village in the Ogongo constituency.  Eight of the seriously injured learners are receiving treatment at the Tsandi State Hospital, while one has been hospitalised in the Oshakati State Hospital. The 33-year-old driver and the other learners were treated for minor injuries at the Tsandi State Hospital and discharged.
