Learners implicated in securit guard’s death

Home National Learners implicated in securit guard’s death

ONGWEDIVA – Two Grade 10 learners from Oshipya Combined School allegedly brutally kicked and beat a security guard to death at Etayi Combined School on Wednesday.

It is alleged that a fight erupted when the guard tried to prevent one of the boys from speaking to a female Grade 10 learner who is currently camping with other learners at the school – in preparation for their external examinations which commenced yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Petrus Josef, 23, an employee of Chippa Security Company.

According to the Omusati Police Public Relations Officer, Warrant-Officer Lineekela Shikongo, it is alleged that an argument erupted when the guard on duty at the school tried to prevent one of the accused from speaking to a female learner.

“Apparently they had a strong argument that led to a fight – they fought until the learner’s friend came and assisted him in beating up the security guard who died on the spot,” explained Shikongo.

The two learners – both aged 19 – were arrested and are expected to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court today.

Many learners who do not stay in hostels in northern Namibia, particularly in the rural areas, have been camping at their school premises to prepare for the Junior Secondary Certificate exams.

Acting Regional Education Director Laban Shapange, said he had not yet received a formal report about the incident and would therefore not comment.

He however confirmed that the school had made special arrangements for the learners to write exams from their police custody in Onadjaba where they are being held.

The principal of Etayi Combined School said he would not comment because internal investigations were still ongoing.
