WINDHOEK– Locals who have been following the legendary South African Afro-fusion band, Stimela, will be glad to learn that the band is headed for Windhoek very soon.
Even though this is not the band’s first performance in Namibia, Stimela has earned a vast fan base in the country prior to independence. Stimela is part of a rich line up of performers on stage at the MTC Trey Songz concert on May 30 at the Independence Stadium. Well-known solo vocalist Sledge Kanime, is blessed that Stimela is coming after such a long absence from the local music scene. “This was one of my favourite bands in the 1980s. Stimela is also a good South African band when it comes to music, it will surely be experiential to watch them perform again,” he says.
Another local muso who got hooked to Stimela after years of listening to their repertoire is Bones Goodheart, the lead vocalist of popular band, Weekend. He says local musicians will learn so much from this band. “It will be good for Namibians to experience this because our musicians idolise Stimela, this band has been in the industry for a long time, and I’m looking forward.”
Stimela is one of South Africa’s longest surviving Afro bands. Formed in the early 1970s, the band became Stimela in 1982. Since it has had many great successes in the music industry with many of its albums going platinum, earning much respect in South Africa as well as abroad.
