RUNDU – A 21-year-old man, Immanuel Kasera, was struck to death by lightning on Friday.
In a separate incident, a 26-year-old woman was also struck by lightning but survived. The two were struck in separate incidents in Kanyikama village, in the Mpungu constituency, Kavango West region.
According to the Kavango West police regional commander, Commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo, Kasera died on the spot.
“The incident occurred whilst the deceased was herding cattle together with his cousin. It’s reported that heavy rain started suddenly, and the deceased was struck by lightning, causing him to fall to the ground. His cousin immediately ran home to report the incident to the family,’’ the commissioner said.
In a separate incident still on Friday, 16 January 2026, at around 16h00, a woman whose name has not been revealed suffered injuries due to lightning.
“It is alleged that a 26-year-old Namibian female was busy weeding in a maize field together with her cousin when she was struck by lightning in a different area in the same village where the previous incidents took place.
As a result, she sustained severe burns to her chest and both legs. She was transported for medical treatment and is currently admitted at Nankudu State Hospital, where she is complaining of chest pains but is in a stable condition,’’ the commander said.
