The much-anticipated Met Gala, originally scheduled for Saturday at the Mercure Hotel, has been postponed due to low ticket sales.
This inaugural fundraising event for fashion designer Mellisa Poulton was aimed to generate funds for her upcoming participation in Paris Fashion Week while also supporting local artists and designers.
Poulton announced the postponement, stating that revenue from table sales did not reach the required amount to cover the event’s expenses.
“We apologise for the inconvenience. The event will still take place, but at a later date. I will announce the new date next week,” she said.
The Met Gala was expected to feature a star-studded line-up, including prominent Namibian musicians and performers such as Lize Ehlers, Lioness, Cassidy, Jblack, Berthold, Litisha the guitarist, Ghetto Ballerina, and Jherico. Additionally, several local designers, including Dawn Diergaardt, Immanuel Tsatago Garoeb, Maggie, and Aina Etuhole Shigwedha, were set to present their latest collections.
Despite this setback, Poulton remains hopeful about the event’s future, asserting that it will proceed even if it occurs after her trip to Paris.
Local artist Litisha Coetzee, who was slated to perform at the Met Gala Dinner, expressed disappointment and confusion regarding the cancellation.
“I was looking forward to being dressed by Mellisa and seeing her other collections that were supposed to be showcased at the Met Gala, as well as observing others people’s outfits since the theme was La Dolce Vita,” she stated.
Although initially disheartened, she remains optimistic that the postponement will ultimately result in a more successful and memorable event.
