Local boxing promoter Gideon Amaambo, better known as Mambos Kochemba, opened up a boxing Academy called The Mambo-5 Boxing Academy in Lüderitz late last year.
The Academy, which boasts a handful of young and determined boxers, aims to address the plight of the youth of Lüderitz through sport, particularly boxing.
Former boxer and trainer Mike Angolo trains the boxers from Monday to Saturday at the Old German hostel & Multipurpose Youth Centre in Lüderitz..
“Our vision this year is to compete in all divisions nationally,” Amaambo says,.
He adds that one of their biggest challenges is the thorny issue of of sponsorship, as he is the only one looking after the affairs of the boxers and the academy, as most of the boxers are unemployed.
Amaambo, however, remains unfazed by the challenges and says his aim of unearthing raw talent in the small towns such as Lüderitz still remains a key objective, while keeping the youth off the streets is another.
