OSHAKATI
The police at Oshakati have confiscated a number of pirated CDs and two television sets, a decoder and a DVD player.
A man in his 30s was arrested in connection with making illegal copies of music produced by Namibian musicians and others.
According to Chief Inspector Karel Marthinus Theron, the man operated from a small office at Oshilemba Complex where he conducted the illicit dealings.
“This guy was selling the pirated CDs at between N$100 and N$150 to people,” he said. He cautioned people to stop buying pirated CDs because this is illegal as it deprives local musicians of their hard-won royalties.
Police have confiscated the illegal copies, a computer and other electronic devices that he was using. He remained in police custody and was due to appear in Oshakati Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
In a separate incident, Oshakati police recovered two television sets, a decoder and a DVD player that were stolen after a house break-in at Ongwediva yesterday.
The police acted on a tip-off from a member of the public who alerted them about the burglary.
Theron said that thieves broke into the house in the morning hours while the owner was still asleep.
They managed to get away with the items, but after a chase by the police, they abandoned the items in the bush. The police recovered the stolen goods. The suspects are still at large.
Theron advised people that are going away for the festive season to inform their neighbours or to alert the police about their absence.
He expressed gratitude for the assistance rendered by members of the public.
