Home National Man attempts suicide for being ‘too dark’

WINDHOEK – Chariko Draghoender, 25, attempted suicide by shooting himself with an airgun on Friday – allegedly because he always sees himself as too black and dark to the extent that his complexion obstructs him in whatever he endeavours, the police said yesterday.

Sergeant Slogan Matheus, from the Namibian Police’s Public Relations Department, informed the media at the weekly crime briefing that the incident happened in Khomasdal.
Matheus added that Draghoender sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Katutura State Hospital from where he was later transferred and admitted to the Windhoek Central Hospital.
His condition was serious but stable. Matheus said the police would notify social workers on Monday for psychological assistance of the victim.
In another matter, a 42-year-old man in expected to appear in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court today after he allegedly stabbed George Ngangane, 25, to death on Friday night in Katutura after a quarrel over money.
Ngangane and the accused were working together and the accused was supervising Ngangane.
A quarrel allegedly erupted between them that led to the stabbing when an amount of N$250 that the accused was provided by the manager to pay the casual workers went missing at work, and when all the employees were searched, Ngangane allegedly refused to be searched.
After stabbing Ngangane, the accused handed himself to the police. The deceased’s next of kin have been informed.
In a separate incident, Nicklaas Narob, 18, was stabbed five times with a knife in the face, neck, chest and back, and died shortly afterwards on Saturday at 01h40 in Kanaan location in Gobabis.
It is alleged that a group of people were drinking alcohol together when an argument broke out. Narob and his nephew then walked away from the group, but the suspects together with two other men followed Narob and stabbed him five times with a knife. He managed to walk a few metres from the scene before he fell and died.
Three suspects have been arrested and are due to appear in the Gobabis Magistrate’s Court today. Narob’s next of kin have been informed.
