WINDHOEK – A resident of Havana informal settlement in Windhoek was granted bail of N$500 in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday for shoplifting underpants.

It is alleged that 22-year-old Protarius Alfeus Kaunandunge went into Edgars at Wernhill Park where he entered a fitting room, put on two pairs of underwear and tried to exit the shop without paying. The two pairs of underwear is valued at N$239. Kaunandunge informed Magistrate Tuvoye Nuule that he will conduct his own defence and that he intends to plead not guilty to the charge. He said that he is employed as a security officer with a salary of N$2 000 per month and can afford bail of N$100 only.

Prosecutor Verinao Kamahene asked the court to postpone the case to March 24 for further investigation and proposed bail of N$300, but the magistrate did not agree with the proposed bail amount and granted bail of N$500 instead. Kaunandunge’s father who was outside the courtroom posted bail on his behalf.
