WINDHOEK – A 44-year-old man jumped off a bridge in Khomasdal in an apparent suicide attempt after he chopped his 43-year-old girlfriend with a panga.
According to Sergeant Slogan Matheus of the Namibian Police Media Liaison Services, the man allegedly assaulted his girlfriend at around 13h30 with the panga in City Street, Wanaheda whereafter he drove to the Florence Nightingale Street Bridge in Khomasdal and jumped off it.
He survived the jump and is currently in the intensive care unit of the Windhoek Central Hospital with serious injuries to his arms and head.
The girlfriend was admitted to the Katutura State Hospital and her condition was reported to be serious but stable.
The suicide attempt was but one of many incidents that marked a weekend of mayhem – of robberies, other crime, attempted suicide and death.
According to the police, a 10-year-old girl died after her throat was slit by a zinc sheet at an informal toilet in Gaddafi Street in Okuryangava on Saturday at around 12h00.
According to the weekly crime bulletin of the Namibian Police, the girl was running downhill to buy sweetened ice cubes when she fell against the zinc sheet.
The girl who was identified as Justina Pineas died on the way to hospital.
Two armed robberies were reported in the Brakwater area in the past week.
In the first instance on Wednesday, two armed robbers held a security guard and gardener at gunpoint at a plot in the area.
According to the weekly crime report the robbers then held the security guard and gardener hostage for about four hours until the owners of Arends Rus at Plot 33 returned home.
The owners were ambushed and they and the security guard and gardener were tied up with rope and locked in a toilet.
The robbers made off with a video camera, an electronic photo album and a wallet containing N$500 in cash and personal documents.
No arrests were made and police investigations continue.
The other armed robbery occurred at Brakwater on Thursday night at around 22h40.
It is alleged that four to five robbers armed with firearms stormed into a house at Plot 45 and held the occupants, one female and two males at gunpoint.
The robbers allegedly tied their victims up with rope and covered them with blankets.
The robbers got away with four laptops, four cellphones, three cameras and cash of N$6 800 which they allegedly carted away in their victims’ rented Nissan 4×4 double cab.
No arrests were effected in the matter nor were the stolen vehicle recovered and police investigations continue.
A death is being investigated by the police after a man who was renting a house in Skopsuil Street in Khomasdal was found dead in his shower.
It is alleged that Jason Pombili Haufiku, 25, arrived home from his work at the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology on Friday night and took a shower. He was discovered dead in the shower with the water still running.
The landlord and fellow tenants allegedly investigated after they heard the shower running non-stop and upon entering the bathroom on Saturday morning found the young man dead.
It is suspected that the deceased might have suffered a heart attack, however a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Two separate cases of murder and attempted robbery were opened after a street kid died while trying to rob an 18-year-old Namibian male.
It is alleged the street kid and two friends accosted the 18-year-old who went shopping with his father.
According to the police report, the 18-year-old who may not be named until he appears in court was approached by the three street kids who produced a knife and demanded money.
When his father who was not far behind him joined them he allegedly slapped one of the street kids who fell down and hit his head on the interlocks and died instantly.
The street kid was identified by his fellow street kids, but no family or relative could be traced so the next of kin was not informed and his name cannot be published.
