Police in Omusati Region are investigating a case in which a 32-year-old man was allegedly apprehended by a group of irate villagers, after he allegedly raped a girl and paid her N$7 in exchange for her silence.

The incident occurred last Saturday at around 23h00 at the village of Oikokola in Etayi Constituency.
It is alleged that the suspect, Ignatius Paulus, who was a guest at a wedding celebration, lured the 13-year-old girl from her homestead where the wedding was taking place and took her to nearby bushes.

He then allegedly undressed and raped her. It is further reported that after the sexual act, the suspect purportedly gave the victim N$7 as payment in exchange for her silence.

The victim however reported the matter to her mother. With the help of other villagers the suspect was apprehended soon after the incident and handed over to the police. A rape case, number CR 21/08/2016, was opened with the Onandjaba police.

The suspect appeared in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was denied bail and his case was postponed for further investigations.

Omusati reginal police spokesperson Lineekela Shikongo confirmed the incident.
