Home Crime and Courts Man perishes in shack blaze

Rundu

A 24-year-old man died in a fire when the room he was sleeping in – made of corrugated zinc sheets – burned down at Sikanduko on the southern outskirts of Rundu yesterday.

The shack reportedly caught alight while the victim was asleep, but the exact cause of the fire is still unknown.

The horrific incident occurred in the early morning hours of Monday at about 04h30 at Kapegere shebeen at Sikanduko in Rundu district. The man could reportedly not be rescued as the fire had already engulfed the shack by the time the neighbours realised.

“By the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the shack had burned to the ground,” said Police Chief Detective Inspector, Crispin Mubebo. The deceased was identified as Tuwane Ismael Phillemon, a 24-year-old resident of Sikanduko. “He burned to death inside and we are still investigating the cause of the fire,” Mubebo said.
