Mathias turns NSFAF refund into clothing brand

ONGWEDIVA – Thobias Mathias (19), a metallurgical engineering student at the University of Namibia (Unam), is making headlines for his entrepreneurial spirit and creative hustle.

The second-year student has launched a clothing brand called ‘Unique In My Own Way’. “It started small, with no financial backing. I used a portion of my NSFAF loan meant for student needs to fund the initial stages. No one believed in it at first, but I remained focused and determined,” he told Youth Corner

Driven by passion and desire for financial independence, he was inspired to start the brand to empower young people to embrace their uniqueness.

“The brand represents individuality, self-expression, confidence and embracing one’s true identity regardless of society’s standards or expectations,” he said.

“We are all unique in our own ways. I want to remind the youth to believe in themselves and trust in their abilities,” he added.

With bold slogans, such as ‘Where self-qualities are showcased in style and drip’ and ‘Let your fashion define you’, the brand has steadily gained traction among students and young people. Mathias said growing up in a challenging environment taught him the value of self-belief and resilience.

“Through this brand, I want to show that it’s okay to stand out and be different. Fashion is a powerful way to do that,” he said.

What began as a simple idea last year has now grown into a promising business.

Mathias taught himself graphic design using basic tools, marketed his products through social media and built relationships with local suppliers willing to accommodate small orders. “I had to learn everything on the go – from pricing, customer service and dealing with suppliers to managing stock,” he stated. “It was overwhelming at times, but every challenge helped me grow,” he added.

Mathias admitted that balancing studies and entrepreneurship has not been easy, especially when sales were low or when things did not go according to plan.

“There were times I wanted to give up. But the support from friends who believed in me and my vision kept me going,” he said.

Despite these obstacles, Mathias said he is proud of the growth the brand has achieved.

“Sales are slowly increasing, and more people are connecting with the message behind the brand. Each item carries a message to be proud of who you are and to express it boldly,” he said. Currently, his T-shirts are sold for N$180-N$200, depending on the design.

He plans to expand his product line to include caps, jackets, floppies, jerseys and branded coffee mugs, especially for the winter season.

“Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Start with what you have. You don’t need big capital, just the right mindset, discipline and belief in your talent. Even a small income can reduce stress and build your confidence,” Mathias said.
