OUTJO – For the first time since taking over the reins as Namibia Football Association (NFA) president, Frans Mbidi will today attend the 37th elective congress of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), in Cairo, Egypt.
Mbidi, who left for Cairo on Sunday morning with NFA first vice-president Naftal Ngalangi and secretary general Barry Rukoro, will join more than one hundred delegates from all over the continent at the congress, where the new CAF Executive Committee will be elected.
New CAF representative members will also be elected during the congress, which will be attended by FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
Speaking to New Era Sport on the sidelines of the Namibian Newspaper Cup in Outjo, Rukoro touched on the importance of the congress, saying that electing and reelecting new members in various positions is very key in terms of formulating a clear roadmap on how football in Africa can reach its peak, especially attaining its developmental goals.
As for Blatter who is currently gunning for a 5th term as the head of the world’s football governing body, CAF has on multiple occasions reaffirmed its support for the 79-year-old ahead of this year’s FIFA elections slated for May 29 in Zurich, Switzerland.
It was recently announced that FIFA’s election panel officially confirmed Blatter and his three rivals Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein of Jordan, Michael van Praag of Netherlands and former Portugal great Luis Figo as the four vetted candidates following the closure of the nominations.
