NKURENKURU – A 36-year-old man died and four others sustained slight to severe injuries when the vehicle they were travelling in overturned at Mbome village in Kavango West on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Karufere Gideon Hausiku, and he died at the scene.
Kavango West Police regional commander commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo told Nampa on Tuesday the accident occurred between 17h00 and 18h00, and the injured, including the driver, were rushed to Nankudu hospital.
The driver, employed by the Ministry of Health and Social Services in Windhoek and the occupants, were all on official duty in the area at the time of the accident.
It is alleged that the driver of the white Toyota Land Cruiser double-cab vehicle with the registration number GRN 7088, travelling from Mpungu to Silikunga village on the D3407 gravel road with four other male occupants, lost control of the vehicle while avoiding two donkeys, and it overturned.
Sakuwa-Neo further said: “It is further alleged that the two donkeys were moving towards the road, and the driver did not know that they were tied to a tree.
As a result, he lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, resulting in the death of one passenger as well as injuries to four occupants, including the driver.
The vehicle also sustained some damage,” she said.
The deceased was a nurse at the Nankudu hospital, and his next of kin have been informed of his death.
