Medical compliance a necessity – Haoseb … mental health patient sheds light on positive living

Ambrosius Haoseb, a committed advocate for mental health residing in Dolam in Windhoek, is focused on promoting the significance of regular medication adherence for those experiencing mental health difficulties.

He asserts that following prescribed treatment regimens can significantly improve daily functioning, and enable individuals to achieve their aspirations.

In a recent interview with Vital Signs, he provided reflections based on his experiences with managing medication as a mental health patient.

“It’s crucial to take the medication consistently to adjust to its effects,” he noted.

Medication provided relief for about 12 hours.

He emphasised the risks associated with improper prescriptions and alterations in dosage, which may result in relapses.

He has been dealing with mental health since he was 20 years of age.

Community engagement

In addition to his dedication to mental health advocacy, Haoseb is focused on community development.

He intends to establish a small business that will provide affordable vegetables, including tomatoes, onions and potatoes to his local community, where numerous residents experience economic difficulties.

“By offering these affordable options, I hope to help feed local children and families,” he expressed, showing his desire to make a positive impact in his community.

He demonstrated a strong commitment to youth engagement, and intends to establish annual events for young individuals, particularly focusing on tournaments for those under 15. However, he is actively seeking sponsors to provide support for these initiatives.

“It is important for kids to engage in these activities instead of just watching TV,” he emphasised.

In his capacity as a community leader, Haoseb is tackling the problem of illegal alcohol distribution, a situation he said had worsened during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He highlighted that numerous individuals erroneously thought that alcohol could serve as a preventive measure against the pandemic, resulting in heightened consumption and related difficulties.

Furthermore, he has recognised an urgent need for feeding programmes within the community, saying that individuals in urban and rural settings are experiencing hunger.

“We need to address these issues to promote fitness and well-being for everyone,” he stated.

Community member Jocelyn Hause highlighted Haoseb’s impact on their community.

“He genuinely cares about us, and wants to provide a good environment for playing,” she said. Eljay Hamuseb also said the community leader always encourages them to do good.

Plans

Looking ahead, Haoseb plans to pursue a doctoral degree to facilitate significant improvements in the Damara location of Windhoek.

He has garnered support from the Office of the President for his initiatives to revitalise local businesses, which are closely associated with the Office of Disability Affairs.

His entrepreneurial aspirations involve the creation of 32 job opportunities through a project that has already received preliminary approval from the Development Bank of Namibia.

Nevertheless, he is actively seeking further funding and assistance for land acquisition to propel his objectives forward.

Haoseb begins his day with prayer and Scripture reading, drawing inspiration and strength from his faith.

He encouraged members of his community to engage and collaborate on development projects, highlighting the necessity of amplifying grassroots’ voices.
