ONGWEDIVA – The Oshana police have confiscated 62 containers of 25 litres of fuel from runaway suspects, who allegedly bought it in Angola to resell in Namibia. On Wednesday morning, the police engaged in a chase with two suspects driving a Toyota Hilux, and apprehended them at a makeshift roadblock between Ondjodjo village and Onhuno.

The suspects, aged 41 and 24, allegedly stopped their vehicle and attempted to make a U-turn when they saw the roadblock ahead of them. This created suspicion among the officers at the roadblock, who decided to go after them.

After a long chase through villages such as Omusheshe, Omatando, Oshali and Eengwena, the police eventually caught up with the suspects, and arrested the driver between Omangela and Oshimwaku village.

One of the suspects managed to escape on foot, but he was arrested about an hour later.

The 62 containers of fuel, consisting of 1 350 litres of petrol and 200 litres of diesel, were confiscated.

The fuel was carried in 25-litre containers.
“We don’t want to engage in fuel smuggling,  but we have no jobs. Our children need to eat,” said one of the suspects at the Oshakati police station.
