‘Mentally ill’ grandfather killer confesses

OKAHAO – A seemingly confused alleged mentally-impaired man, who stands accused of killing his 82-year-old grandfather by hacking him with a panga several times, has confessed to the crime.

“I killed him out of my own will but I did not plan to kill him. Something was wrong in my head,” said Simson Mosatigo when he appeared in the Okahao Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of murder.

The victim was identified as Shiimi Shivute.

The 46-year-old’s case has been postponed to 8 September 2023 while he is undergoing a medical evaluation.

Shivute was allegedly seated on a chair in his mahangu field to take a rest from cutting droppers for his fence when the attack happened.

He was drinking oshikundu and the panga that was eventually used as a murder weapon was beside him.

Without any provocation or confrontation, Mosatigo allegedly approached him, grabbed the panga and hacked him twice on the head. He died on the spot.

“I left him in a pool of blood and I went home… Had I taken my medication, I would not have killed my grandfather. Now, I am regretting what I did to him,” narrated Mosatigo, who allegedly lives in a neighbouring homestead.

The accused is blaming his relatives for being irresponsible because they failed to collect his medication on time.

The family members who spoke to this publication said Mosatigo suffers from mental illness but he was not aggressive.

“He is a good man. He does not give problems. We are shocked by what he did,” said his cousin Naftal Kapadhi.

His sister Cleuladia Kapolo confirmed that Mosatigo’s medication had run out.

“I was just about to go to the hospital to collect his medication the following day then the incident happened,” she added.
