By Confidence Musariri A whopping N$1-million has been set aside for this Saturday night’s NFA Awards ceremony to be held at the Safari Court Hotel in the capital. League champions Civics are set to receive the biggest chunk of that money as N$500 000 will be awarded to the premier league winners, while the runners-up Ramblers and third placed Blue Waters are set to scramble for N$225 000 and N$130 000 respectively. Namibia Football Association (NFA) coordinator, Titus Kunamwene, yesterday revealed that the ceremony will be staged to the tune of N$300 000, excluding the prize monies. The 2006 NFA football awards will be graced by FIFA’s Centennial Award, which is an honorary award set to be given to the country’s most illustrious son in developing the sport. Said Kunamwene, “As we may all know, FIFA has celebrated its one hundred years of football. They have asked all affiliate associations to recognise individuals who have done much in developing football, and on Saturday Namibia will honour its own son.” The name of the recipient of the FIFA Award will only be revealed on the awards night, according to the NFA. The NFA has explained that the team of the season award will be treated differently to the league winners’ award. “There is a contract that the NFA is following regarding the criteria of awards. You may find debutants in the league winning the team of the season. A seasoned team might win the league but newcomers might be found winning the team of the season perhaps in the way they survived relegation or the way they played in the cup tournaments,” Kunamwene said.. Last year’s awards were marred by controversy when league champions Civics cried foul complaining that there were outright favourites to the team of the season award. New Era quizzed Kunamwene on whether the association would recognise the awards’ competition run by the monthly magazine, Namibia Sport. “Those who run other competitions should co-operate with the premier league and the NFA. It’s good to have such competitions but all parties are yet to find a common path, as there have been no consultations.” There were notable disgruntlements last year at the NamPower Convention Centre when the Namibia Sport’s Readers voted William Chilufya as player of the season, while the NFA opted for Henrico Botes. “We have a new contract of running the awards. The contract for last year’s awards has expired already,” said the premier league’s Tovey Hoebeb.Expelled, Eric Hansen was the organiser of last year’s awards, after which he was blasted for giving himself the administrator of the year award. The NFA has already received correspondence from the local premiership clubs who were asked to submit the names of individuals fancied for the coach of the season, player’s player of the season and manager of the season awards. “We as the NFA will only compile the list and pick the most voted ones,”Kunamwene stressed. The lower divisions have also been given a bite of the cherry, with the first division league winners expected to smile N$35 000 richer and N$18 000 for the runners-up.
